Assam greenfield airports are set to redefine the state’s aviation landscape after the Assam government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to study the feasibility of building five new airports.
The agreement marks a strategic push to strengthen Assam aviation connectivity while positioning the state as a gateway to Southeast Asia and a stronger tourism hub in Northeast India.

Five Proposed Locations Identified
Under the MoU, feasibility studies will examine the development of greenfield airports at:
- Manas National Park
- Umrangso
- Majuli
- Diphu
- Charaideo
These proposed sites were selected with the objective of improving regional access, stimulating local economies, and increasing tourist inflow.
At the signing ceremony, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the Airports Authority of India for backing the initiative. He emphasized that the expansion would serve both strategic and tourism interests, especially as Assam continues to grow as an entry point to Southeast Asian markets.
The Assam greenfield airports initiative is expected to complement existing infrastructure and help bridge connectivity gaps in remote districts.
Strengthening Assam Aviation Connectivity
Beyond new airports, the state leadership also highlighted the importance of upgrading Rupsi Airport, citing its strategic geographical location. Expanded infrastructure there could significantly enhance regional mobility.
Additionally, there is renewed emphasis on increasing international flight services from Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, which already serves as the primary aviation hub of the region.
By combining new projects with upgrades to existing facilities, the Assam greenfield airports roadmap reflects a broader strategy to elevate Assam aviation connectivity across domestic and international routes.
Tourism and Economic Implications
Improved air access to destinations like Majuli and Manas National Park could drive higher tourist footfall, benefiting hospitality, transport, and local businesses.
Enhanced Assam aviation connectivity is also expected to improve trade logistics and attract investment into the state’s emerging sectors.
With feasibility studies now underway in collaboration with AAI, the coming months will determine timelines and technical viability. If executed as envisioned, Assam greenfield airports could become a transformative infrastructure leap for the region.
