Mizoram tourism growth is gaining rapid momentum as improved railway connectivity and major infrastructure investments position the state as the fastest-growing tourist destination in Northeast India, Governor VK Singh said.
Addressing the state assembly on the first day of the Budget session in Aizawl, the governor highlighted how enhanced accessibility and high-value development projects are transforming the state’s tourism landscape.
Rail Link Driving Mizoram Tourism Growth
The governor described the Bairabi-Sairang rail line as a historic milestone that has significantly improved connectivity and created new opportunities for trade, tourism, and employment.
According to Singh, the rail link has integrated Aizawl into the national railway network and triggered a sharp rise in tourist arrivals, playing a central role in accelerating Mizoram tourism growth.
Tourist Arrivals See Record Increase
Mizoram recorded a total tourist footfall of more than 6.79 lakh visitors in the nine months leading up to December 2025, including 9,606 foreign tourists.
The figure represents a 29.50 percent increase compared to the total tourist footfall of the previous year. December alone witnessed an unprecedented surge of over 1.33 lakh visitors, marking a 122.11 percent rise compared to the same month a year earlier.
The sharp increase reflects the growing appeal of the state as a travel destination and highlights the impact of improved accessibility and infrastructure development.
Infrastructure Boost for Eco-Tourism and Heritage Sites
The governor said the state government continues to focus on promoting eco-tourism with strong support from the central government.
Under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment scheme, Mizoram received ₹34.5 crore for the construction of a ropeway at Vantawng Falls near Thenzawl in Mamit district, aimed at enhancing tourist experiences.
The Union Tourism Ministry also sanctioned ₹5.47 crore under the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive scheme for the development of basic amenities at Vangchhia in Champhai district, which is known for its approximately 170 menhirs.
Additionally, the Tourism Ministry provided ₹9.97 crore for the construction of a convention centre at Thingsulthliah in Saitual district to strengthen tourism infrastructure.
Sustainable Tourism Initiatives
To ensure long-term and sustainable Mizoram tourism growth, the state Tourism Department signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Environment, Forests and Climate Change department.
The partnership was formalised during the first Mizoram Travel Fest in October 2025 and aims to enhance cooperation in promoting eco-tourism and sustainable development practices across the state.
