Each of the eight states in Northeast India has its own distinct climate, shaped by altitude, geography, and proximity to the Bay of Bengal and the Himalayan ranges. Here's what to expect from each state capital.
Shillong sits at around 1,500 metres above sea level, earning it the nickname "Scotland of the East." It enjoys a pleasant, temperate climate for most of the year, with cool winters (8–12°C) and mild summers (16–24°C). However, Meghalaya is home to Cherrapunji and Mawsynram — the wettest places on Earth — so the monsoon season (June to September) brings extremely heavy rainfall. Carry waterproofs if visiting between June and October.
Guwahati is the gateway to the Northeast and sits in the Brahmaputra valley at a low elevation. Summers are hot and humid (32–36°C), while winters are cool and dry (8–18°C). The best time to visit Guwahati is between November and March, when the weather is comfortable and ideal for exploring the city and nearby Kaziranga National Park. Monsoon brings heavy rain and occasional flooding from June to September.
Itanagar has a subtropical climate with warm summers (25–30°C) and mild winters (10–18°C). Rainfall is heavy during the monsoon (May to September). Higher districts like Tawang experience sub-alpine and alpine conditions, with snowfall between December and February and temperatures dropping well below freezing at night. Check the forecast carefully if you're heading to higher-altitude destinations within the state.
Imphal sits in a valley at about 790 metres and enjoys a moderate climate. Summers are warm (25–30°C) and winters cool (5–15°C). The monsoon runs from May to September. The best time to visit Manipur is October to March, when skies are clear and the famous Loktak Lake is at its most scenic. The Sangai Festival in November is held during some of the best weather of the year.
Aizawl, perched on a ridge at about 1,132 metres, has a pleasant sub-tropical highland climate. Temperatures rarely exceed 30°C in summer and drop to around 8–11°C in winter. Monsoon is active from May to September. Mizoram weather is generally comfortable year-round, making it one of the more accessible NE states to visit outside the monsoon months.
Kohima sits at over 1,440 metres and has a cool, temperate climate. Summers are pleasant (16–24°C) while winters can be quite cold (4–10°C). The Hornbill Festival in December — Nagaland's biggest cultural event — falls in the cool dry season, making it an ideal time to visit. Pack layers even in summer as evenings can get chilly at this altitude.
Gangtok has a cool, temperate climate year-round due to its elevation of around 1,650 metres. Summers are mild (15–25°C) and winters cold (2–7°C), with snowfall possible from December to February. The monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain and can disrupt road access to higher areas like Lachung and Lachen. The best time to visit Sikkim for clear mountain views is October to early December or March to May.
Agartala is one of the warmest state capitals in the Northeast, sitting at a low elevation with a tropical climate. Summers are hot and humid (30–36°C) while winters are mild (10–20°C). The monsoon brings significant rainfall from June to September. October to March is the best time to visit Tripura, when the weather is comfortable for sightseeing and temple visits.
Understanding the seasons is key to planning the right trip to Northeast India. The region broadly follows four seasons, though timing and intensity vary by state and altitude.
Spring in Northeast India is lush and colourful. Temperatures begin to climb from comfortable to warm, ranging from 20–32°C across most lowland areas. Rhododendrons bloom across the hills of Meghalaya, Sikkim, and Arunachal. Occasional pre-monsoon showers start appearing in April, especially in Meghalaya and Assam. This is an excellent time to visit before the peak monsoon sets in — trails are accessible, skies are partly clear, and crowds are low.
This is the wettest season across the region. Cherrapunji can receive over 1,000mm of rainfall in a single month during peak monsoon. Landslides can block mountain roads, particularly in Arunachal, Sikkim, and Nagaland. Flooding is common in the Brahmaputra plains of Assam. That said, the monsoon transforms the landscape into vivid shades of green, and waterfalls across Meghalaya are at their most spectacular. Experienced travellers who plan carefully can still have rewarding trips during this period.
October and November are widely considered the best months to visit Northeast India. The rains have withdrawn, skies are clear, and temperatures are pleasantly cool — typically 15–26°C. Visibility is excellent for mountain views in Sikkim and Arunachal. Major festivals like the Hornbill Festival (Nagaland, December) and Sangai Festival (Manipur, November) fall in this shoulder season, making it a culturally rich time to travel.
Winter brings cool to cold temperatures across the region. Higher elevations in Sikkim, Tawang (Arunachal), and Dzukou Valley (Nagaland) see snowfall and sub-zero nights. State capitals remain accessible and comfortable for sightseeing, typically between 5–18°C. This is the dry season — roads are clear, skies are blue, and accommodation is easier to find. A good warm layering system is essential for any winter trip to the higher states.
Mawsynram in Meghalaya holds the record as the wettest place on Earth, receiving an average annual rainfall of around 11,872mm. Cherrapunji, also in Meghalaya, is a close second and more accessible for tourists. Both locations receive the bulk of their rainfall during the monsoon season between June and September.
The best time to visit Northeast India is October to April. Post-monsoon (October–November) offers clear skies, lush landscapes, and festival season. Winter (December–February) is ideal for lower elevations and cultural trips. Spring (March–May) is great for flowers and mild weather before the rains arrive. Each state has its own optimal window — use our weather tool above to check current conditions for your specific destination.
Yes. Snowfall is common in higher-altitude areas between December and February. Tawang (Arunachal Pradesh), Lachung and Nathula (Sikkim), and the Dzukou Valley (Nagaland) are among the most popular destinations to experience snow in the Northeast. The state capitals themselves, except Gangtok on a rare cold night, generally do not see snowfall.
Mizoram and Nagaland are often cited for having the most consistently pleasant weather due to their moderate hill elevations. Aizawl and Kohima rarely get extremely hot in summer or bitterly cold in winter. Sikkim is also excellent for those who enjoy cool, crisp mountain air year-round, though it receives significant monsoon rain.
The Northeast is not directly on the cyclone path, but cyclonic storms forming in the Bay of Bengal can bring exceptionally heavy rainfall to states like Tripura, Mizoram, and southern Assam — especially during the pre-monsoon and monsoon months (April to October). Always check the weather forecast before travelling during these periods.
The weather data is sourced from Open-Meteo, a free and open-source weather API that uses high-resolution meteorological models. Forecasts are generally accurate to ±1–2°C for temperature and reliable for precipitation trends up to 5 days ahead. Beyond 5 days, treat the forecast as indicative rather than precise — especially in the highly variable terrain of Northeast India.
