Mizoram, which emerged as the fastest-growing tourist destination in Northeast India, has captured national attention after recording a historic surge in visitor arrivals in 2025. The state’s expanding eco-tourism sector, rich cultural heritage, and scenic landscapes continue to attract both domestic and international travellers.
With strong tourism initiatives, infrastructure development, and sustainable practices, Mizoram is rapidly emerging as a leading travel destination in the region.
Record Tourist Arrivals in 2025
The rise of Mizoram’s status as the fastest-growing tourist destination is reflected in its impressive visitor numbers. Between April and December 2025, the state recorded a total of 6,79,607 tourist arrivals.
Out of the total visitors, 6,70,001 were domestic travellers, while 9,606 were international tourists. The figures represent a significant 29.5 percent increase compared to the previous year, highlighting the state’s growing appeal among travellers seeking natural beauty and cultural diversity.
December 2025 alone recorded the highest-ever monthly tourist footfall, with 1,33,520 visitors — a remarkable 122.11 percent increase compared to December 2024. The surge demonstrates the effectiveness of Mizoram’s tourism initiatives and its rising recognition as a preferred travel destination.
Recognition for Eco-Tourism Efforts
Mizoram’s tourism department gained national and international recognition for its sustainable tourism initiatives. The state received the “Emerging Eco and Nature Retreat Award” at the 10th edition of the International Tourism Conclave and Travel Awards held in New Delhi in July 2025.
The award acknowledges Mizoram’s efforts to promote eco-friendly tourism while preserving its pristine natural environment, strengthening its reputation as an eco-tourism hub.
Mizoram Travel Fest and Sustainable Tourism Initiatives
The state’s tourism development received further momentum through the first-ever Mizoram Travel Fest, organised in Aizawl from October 8 to 10, 2025.
The event featured cooking competitions, business-to-business meetings, and an investors’ summit, creating opportunities for tourism stakeholders and local businesses. A key outcome of the festival was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Tourism Department and the Environment, Forests, and Climate Change Department to promote eco-tourism and sustainable growth.
Infrastructure Projects Boost Tourism Growth
Infrastructure development has played a crucial role in strengthening Mizoram’s status as the fastest-growing tourist destination. The Union Ministry of Tourism sanctioned ₹5.47 crore under the PRASHAD scheme to upgrade facilities at Vangchhia in Champhai district, a heritage site known for its vast necropolis and 171 ancient carved stones at Kawtchhuah Ropui.
The state also received ₹34.50 crore for the Vantawng View Aerial Ropeway Project, which aims to enhance accessibility to Vantawng Waterfall and provide visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding forests.
Additionally, ₹9.97 crore has been allocated for the construction of a convention centre in Thingsulthliah, designed to support conferences, exhibitions, and tourism-related events.
Cultural Preservation and Community Development
Mizoram’s tourism strategy emphasises cultural preservation alongside economic growth. The “Our Heritage, Our Treasure” project at Vangchhia, supported by the North Eastern Council, focuses on protecting cultural traditions while creating income-generating opportunities for local communities.
The state is also promoting its cultural identity through the Live Museum at Zokhua, Falkawn, where visitors can experience traditional Mizo customs, crafts, and practices through live demonstrations. Due to increasing visitor interest, the programme has been extended until March 2026.
