A major landslide on the crucial Shillong–Dawki Road has severely disrupted road connectivity in East Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya, forcing authorities to suspend all public and vehicular movement beyond Laitlyngkot village until further notice.
The landslide, which occurred at Chainage 25+200 along the Shillong–Dawki route, has completely damaged a section of the road, cutting off access to areas beyond the main Laitlyngkot village. The incident has raised concerns among commuters, tourists, transport operators, and local residents who rely on the highway as a key link between Shillong and Dawki.
Road Connectivity Severed After Major Landslide
According to an official notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, the landslide caused extensive damage to the roadway, making the affected stretch unsafe for travel.
The Shillong–Dawki Road is one of Meghalaya’s most important transport corridors, connecting the state capital Shillong with the popular tourist destination of Dawki and the India-Bangladesh border. The route is heavily used by tourists visiting attractions such as the Umngot River, Shnongpdeng, and other destinations in the Khasi Hills region.
With the road completely cut off beyond Laitlyngkot, authorities have moved swiftly to restrict access and prevent any potential accidents.
Restoration Work May Take Several Days
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has informed the district administration that repair and restoration work is already being planned. However, officials indicated that the extent of the damage is significant and restoration may take several days to complete.
Engineering teams are expected to assess slope stability, clear debris, and undertake necessary road reconstruction work before the route can be reopened safely.
Authorities have not yet announced a tentative reopening date.
Administration Orders Immediate Closure
In the interest of public safety and to facilitate restoration efforts, the district administration has ordered the immediate closure of the Shillong–Dawki Road from Laitlyngkot village onwards.
The restrictions apply to all categories of vehicles, including private cars, commercial vehicles, tourist transport, and public transportation services.
Officials emphasized that the closure is necessary to protect commuters from potential risks associated with unstable terrain, falling debris, and ongoing repair operations.
Tourists and Commuters Advised to Avoid the Route
The administration has urged residents, tourists, and transport operators to avoid planning journeys through the affected section of the Shillong–Dawki Road until further updates are issued.
The closure is expected to impact tourist travel to Dawki, one of Meghalaya’s most visited destinations, particularly during the ongoing travel season.
Travellers have been advised to monitor official notifications and follow instructions issued by local authorities regarding alternative arrangements and road status updates.
Recommended alternative routes include Shillong–Sohra–Sohbar–Dawki and Shillong–Jowai–Amlarem–Dawki.
Restrictions to Continue Until Further Notice
District officials stated that the restrictions will remain in force until restoration work is completed and the road is declared safe for public use.
The incident highlights the challenges posed by landslides and extreme weather conditions in Meghalaya’s hilly terrain, especially during the monsoon season when road infrastructure is vulnerable to slope failures and erosion.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as restoration efforts progress on the affected stretch of the Shillong–Dawki Road.
