Deepor Beel is back in focus after the release of a new book that documents the remarkable bird diversity of one of Northeast India’s most significant wetlands.
Titled Birds of Deepor Beel, the publication was launched at the Assam Forest School in Jalukbari, where conservationists, researchers and officials highlighted the importance of protecting the wetland and raising biodiversity awareness.
The book has been authored by noted naturalist and wildlife expert Dr. Anwaruddin Choudhury.
Deepor Beel Book Highlights Rich Avifaunal Diversity
The publication presents a detailed account of the wetland’s birdlife, recording 352 species from Deepor Beel and nearby areas.
Based on decades of field observations, the 144-page book includes colour photographs, species descriptions and a comprehensive checklist.
The scale of documentation underlines why Deepor Beel remains one of the most important habitats for birdlife in the region.
For birdwatchers, researchers and conservation supporters, the book offers a valuable reference on the wetland’s ecological wealth.

Deepor Beel Birds and Wetland Importance
Beyond its bird diversity, the book also explains the wider environmental value of the wetland.
Deepor Beel serves as a habitat for resident and migratory birds, while also functioning as a stormwater basin for Guwahati.
It is also described as an important livelihood source for local communities connected to the wetland ecosystem.
That combination of biodiversity, urban ecological value and community relevance makes the site especially important for long-term conservation planning.
Conservation Challenges Still Need Attention
The book also points to growing threats facing the wetland.
Among the key concerns highlighted are habitat loss, siltation, invasive vegetation and increasing urban pressures.
Speakers at the release event stressed that sustained conservation efforts will be necessary to protect the ecosystem for future generations.
They also acknowledged Dr. Choudhury’s role in documenting regional biodiversity through his latest work.
Book Released Under International Biodiversity Project
The publication was released under the Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project, a bilateral initiative involving the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Government of Germany, and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India.
The Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS) is the implementing partner of the project.
The event brought together officials, researchers, community representatives and students, including participants from the Deepor Beel area and Hari Gayatri Das College.
With stronger public awareness and continued conservation support, the new book is expected to help deepen appreciation for Deepor Beel and its extraordinary birdlife.
