A new report by BookMyShow, the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC), and EY-Parthenon has placed Guwahati firmly on India’s live entertainment map, revealing how large-scale concerts are generating substantial economic returns for Assam — and why the state’s biggest chapter in concert tourism may still be ahead.
A City Transformed by Live Entertainment
Guwahati is no longer just Northeast India’s commercial gateway. Major concerts are steadily transforming the city into a thriving hub for concert tourism, drawing fans from across the country and pumping money into local hotels, restaurants, and businesses.
The findings, published jointly by BookMyShow, ATDC, and EY-Parthenon, show that Assam is emerging as one of India’s most promising destinations for live entertainment — a shift driven by strategic investment in large-scale events and a rapidly growing audience base in the region.
Post Malone Concert: ₹43 Crore Impact, 20,000 Fans
The clearest evidence of this shift came last year, when American rapper and singer Post Malone performed in Guwahati. The concert drew nearly 20,000 attendees and generated an estimated economic impact of ₹43 crore, according to the report.
Crucially, more than 53% of those attendees travelled from outside Guwahati — spanning over 200 cities — turning a single concert night into a tourism event in its own right.
The spending didn’t stop at the ticket counter either. For every ₹100 spent on a concert ticket, attendees spent an additional ₹899 on travel, accommodation, dining, and shopping, the report found. Hotels in Guwahati witnessed an estimated 30% increase in occupancy during the concert period.
Beyond the show itself, visitors also explored some of Assam’s most iconic destinations — adding a broader cultural dimension to what began as a music event.
₹700 Crore Projected Over the Next Five Years
The report’s forward-looking projections are equally significant. Assam is projected to generate around ₹700 crore in economic impact through 15 or more marquee events over the next five years — a figure that underscores how live entertainment is becoming a core pillar of the state’s economic growth strategy.
Adding to that momentum, rock legends Guns N’ Roses are set to perform in Guwahati on 17th November, further cementing the city’s reputation as a destination capable of hosting world-class acts.
Assam’s rise as a concert tourism destination reflects a broader truth: that experiences, when done at scale, can drive tourism and local economic growth just as effectively as traditional attractions. With the data now firmly on its side, Guwahati’s live entertainment story is only getting bigger.
