In a historic fusion of international inspiration and deep-rooted regional tradition, Assam’s world-renowned river island, Majuli, is set to introduce a London-style double-decker sightseeing bus. The landmark tourism initiative was announced by the spiritual head (Satradhikar) of the Sri Sri Auniati Satra, Dr. Pitambar Dev Goswami, following his historic tour of the United Kingdom, where he addressed the British Parliament at Westminster.
The signature double-decker bus, which is currently under construction in Jalandhar, is scheduled to make its official public debut during the island’s upcoming Raas Purnima celebrations. The initiative marks a major shift forward for Majuli’s travel landscape, offering domestic and international eco-tourists a unique, elevated view of the island’s expansive landscape, historic monasteries (Satras), and vibrant missing villages.
Bridging Global Heritage and Neo-Vaishnavite Culture
According to Dr. Pitambar Dev Goswami, the sightseeing bus aims to enhance Majuli’s international profile, blending modern transit infrastructure with traditional hospitality. The project symbolizes the expanding footprint of Assamese culture globally, an outreach effort that was further cemented by the announcement of two prestigious institutional awards for international contributors.
The Auniati Satra revealed that the revered Sankardev Research Award 2026 will be conferred upon British researcher Richard Blurton for his extensive scholarly contributions to promoting Assamese Vaishnavite culture in the West. Simultaneously, United Kingdom Member of Parliament (MP) Bob Blackman will be honored with the Sri Sri Damodardev Award 2026 for his pivotal role in facilitating platforms for the teachings of Srimanta Sankardev, Madhavdev, and Damodardev within the UK.
“The introduction of this global-standard tourism asset, alongside our international outreach, will elevate Majuli’s cultural identity onto the grandest international stages,” expressed the Satradhikar during his public address upon returning to the island.
Perfect Timing for Peak Festival Season
Launching the double-decker bus during Raas Purnima is a major strategic boost for local travel operators. The festival represents Majuli’s peak tourism footprint, drawing tens of thousands of devotees and travelers to witness the island’s unique Raas Leela performances and spiritual dramas.
By integrating a novel sightseeing mechanism with the island’s foundational neo-Vaishnavite spiritual tourism, the initiative underscores a forward-thinking vision for economic development that respects and preserves the unparalleled sanctity of the cultural landscape.
The Auniati Satra Return Reception Video documents the festive arrival of Satradhikar Dr. Pitambar Dev Goswami at the Kamalabari ferry ghat in Majuli following his monumental trip to London, which laid the groundwork for these cross-continental tourism and cultural honors.
