Mizoram as winter capital of India, is gaining national attention, with the state government seeking stronger collaboration from the Centre to turn the vision into reality.
During a recent meeting in New Delhi, Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar discussed Mizoram’s long-term tourism plans with Union Tourism Secretary Bhuvnesh Kumar. The conversation focused on strengthening tourism infrastructure, increasing visitor engagement, and positioning the state as a major seasonal destination.
Mizoram as winter capital of India initiative is aimed at attracting more tourists during the winter season while encouraging travelers to spend more time in and around Aizawl before exploring other parts of the state.
Mizoram Seeks Central Support for Tourism Growth
Hmar highlighted the need for capacity building and awareness campaigns as Mizoram prepares for a possible increase in tourist arrivals. According to the minister, tourism development should move forward without affecting the state’s cultural identity and traditional social values.
He also presented several proposals for collaboration with the Centre, emphasizing that tourism expansion must remain balanced with cultural preservation.
The minister’s approach reflects a broader effort to ensure that economic opportunities from tourism do not come at the expense of Mizo heritage.
Union Tourism Secretary Highlights Untapped Potential
Union Tourism Secretary Bhuvnesh Kumar acknowledged Mizoram’s tourism potential during the meeting. Kumar had recently visited Aizawl and Thenzawl in Serchhip district, where he reviewed tourism opportunities and regional attractions.
According to Kumar, the state still has significant untapped potential that can be developed further, especially in locations accessible from Aizawl, which serves as the primary gateway for visitors entering Mizoram.
He stressed the importance of building major tourist attractions within practical travel distance from the capital to improve visitor experiences and encourage longer stays.
“One State: One Global Destination” Project Linked to Aizawl
Kumar also pointed to the Centre’s “One State: One Global Destination” project as an important opportunity for Mizoram. He suggested that the initiative should be implemented around Aizawl because of its strategic role as the main entry point for tourists.
The Union Tourism Secretary described the Mizoram as winter capital of India proposal as an innovative idea and assured full support from his office for the state’s tourism vision.
The development signals growing coordination between the state and central governments as Mizoram works to strengthen its position on India’s tourism map.
